Detecting and Eliminating Computer Viruses at the Gateway
By: CipherTrust
Traditional anti-virus software only stops known computer viruses – stopping undefined computer viruses requires a different approach.
In the past, network administrators scrambled to apply new virus signatures whenever new computer viruses were discovered. While these signatures will stop a known threat, it takes time for anti-virus vendors to develop them. Unfortunately, the newest and most damaging viruses are able to spread so quickly that the damage is done before a signature can be developed and distributed.
In fact, the independent testing laboratory AV-test.org found the response times for major anti-virus software publishers to range from just under 7 hours to almost 30 hours , with the four leading vendors (Sophos, McAfee, Symantec and Trend Micro) clocking in at no less than 12 hours.
In January 2004, the computer virus known as “MyDoom” created mass disruption to corporate resources and reputations as it quickly spread through e-mail networks worldwide. At its peak, MyDoom infected one in every five e-mails transmitted over the Internet. The w …

Computers, Introverts and the Information Age
By: Susan Dunn
Awhile ago I was researching a topic on the Internet, and found several psychologists saying that extended time spent on the Internet led to depression. Something didn’t resonate with me when I read that. I spend a lot of time on the Internet and it energizes me. But then I’m more of an introvert.
But I’m only more of an introvert than an extravert, as I spent years in the effervescent fields of marketing and P.R. How so?
According to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (M-B), extraverts prefer to interact with people and the outside world. They tend to enjoy the high-energy, outgoing professions like sales and marketing. Introverts, on the other hand, pefer an inner world of concepts and ideas. Their energy comes from quiet thought and introspection. Typical professions for them are writers, lawyers or researchers. But these are only preferences, says Janet Thuesen, co-author of “Type Talk,” a book about the M-B. Most introverts manage to act like extraverts when the occasion calls for it, just as left-handed people manage to use the numeric keypad on the computer …

Computers Freedom and Privacy
By: Mike Banks Valentine
Last week I attended the Computers, Freedom & Privacy (CFP2002) conference where I heard four days of discussion and debate from attorneys, corporate leaders, politicians and privacy advocates over issues of civil liberties, privacy and commerce.
I’ve come away from that very enlightening conference with a rather pessimistic conclusion — That Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy was correct when he said, “You have zero privacy anyway,” to a group of reporters in January of 1999, but I stop FAR short of McNealy’s suggestion that we should . . . “Get over it.” On the contrary, I suggest we all consider getting ON it and taking a wild ride to protect what little privacy we have remaining and attempt to regain the ground lost since September 11.
The worst thing for privacy from 9/11 beyond the innocent deaths was the call for a national ID card from our good friend Larry Ellison and echoed by less enlightened members of congress. That concept was discussed in great detail at the CFP2002 conference by Andrew Schulman. I highly …

Computers and Internet: Inspiring Us to Create
By: Daniel Punch
Computers and Internet are not deadening our heads; they are inspiring us to create!
The Internet is sometimes criticized (usually by parents who think their kids need to be outdoors more often) as leading people to be sitting in front of their computers all day growing bulbous, lethargic and (depending on who you talk to) stupid. I think that the opposite can often be true. My friends and I have recently been inspired to new creative ventures through the time spent online.
I have long been a fan of movies, martial arts movies in particular. It has been said that they’re kind of like the modern musical with finely choreographed dances (although in this case the ‘dance’ is a fight) showing fantastic physical ability, timing, and grace. Recently I have found that there are many online groups of people dedicated to making their own martial arts films. Most of these guys are really talented and I’ve seen film fight scenes that are better than the majority of the American made ‘martial arts’ movies. Where the commercial films focus on special effects, from wirework (at …

Computers & Internet
By: Sajjad Butt
One can easily say that these are the inventions of the century. It has done what one could not imagine. It has open the doors of the world to the world. What are you thinking now? Whatever you do, just put that in a search engine, you will be amazed to see the data on that, its amazing. Information on fingertips, one just has to type that. At this day and age, the current of terms of literacy says that a person who doesn’t know about computers is not literate. It simply shows as to how deeply this is involved in every walk of life, just name it. There is a tendency of humans to accept change with time or not accept it at all. Change does cause stress. See the bright aspect. These inventions have changed the face of the world. Businesses are stretched from one corner of the world to another. Who says that you have to hire someone in your local area to get your work done, you can get a person have your work done on the portals that serve as a bridge between the company and the skilled. Do you want to express yourself? Do you want to do business? …

Computer’s Data Security: Necessity and Myth
By: Liuba Ceban
There is no 100 % protection for your computer. But this doesn’t mean you cannot prevent you data to be unauthorized accessed. Once I was chatting with my colleagues about the security issues and the ways the information can be protected. Our main goal was to understand if the Dekart family products can be used for assuring data access protection. We were talking about existing software, about the devices available for buyers and about the percentage of an assurance we can get from these tools available on the modern market so far. We also touched the other side of protection: it’s vulnerability. We came to the conclusion that it is not simple to get the information protected, as there are many well-established strategies and methods developers (to say nicely), whose target is to get to know what is valuable for you. But anyway there are the directions we can work on in order to minimize the risks for unauthorized access to our data. Here are they. 1. If you want to protect your data it is important to assure the building (office, home), security access and …

Computer Tips that Help Small Businesses Operate Profitably
By: Sharron Senter
When working properly, computers enable small businesses to make big business profits; however, get booted off your computer and you’re suddenly starving. In most instances, computers usually act up due to lack of care by its owners. Here are four computer tips that’ll keep you up and running smoothly. Tip #1 — Back up your computer’s data no less than once a month. Too often a small business is thrust back to infancy because it didn’t take time to back up precious data; information that took hours upon hours to create. Information that’s irreplaceable, such as customer databases or employment contracts. Keep in mind you’ll want to back up your written data as well as check books such as Quicken and email address books. If your computer has a CD writer, it’s simple and quick to back up your data. Simply select the files and folders you want to back up and copy them to the writer. Or if you have an older computer, copy your most important files to a floppy disk. Either way, don’t stop there; now take the CD or disk and store it in a fire-safe box! To expedi …

Computer Stress and How To Deal With It
By: Trevor Dumbleton
Of all the forms of stress in today’s world, computer stress is the one that is on the rise the fastest. Computers are wonderful machines, but they can also stress out workers by their sometimes confusing demands, their constant presence and their simple inability to work properly. Thus, computer stress must be understood and it must find an outlet or computer users will find themselves even more stressed out than they already are.
The first thing to remember about computers is that they are machines. They do not have feelings, they do not respond to emotional appeals, they only do what they are told to do; nothing more and nothing less. Thus, you need to remember that just about anything that your computer does is probably something you told it to do. Sure, you may not have wanted to tell it to do something, but you told the computer to do it and that’s all it knows. You can save yourself a lot of computer stress by keeping this in mind.
The next thing you need to know in order to avoid computer stress is that computers are machines and, therefore, they will brea …

Computer Running Slow?…Here’s One Reason
By: John Evans
“Computer Running Slow?…Here’s One Reason!” copyright 2001-02 John Evans
Just the other day, my computer started running a little slow. Kind of puzzled me. And I put up with it for a while.
But then it got a little irritating. While trying to surf the web, I noticed that web pages were taking much too long to load. This is always an irritant. And, Internet Explorer was also taking its time coming up.
Now, I’m no novice on the computer, but, sometimes we humans can get a ‘lapse of memory’. Anyway, that’s my excuse for forgetting one of the basics of computing; and that is that the computer uses up SYSTEM RESOURCES.
Every program on the computer, including icons, uses some SYSTEM RESOURCES.
Whenever a program is started, it loads into your computer’s memory. Memory is a resource. Some programs will release the memory it was using, when you quit the program, and some will not. So, part of a resource is not being made available to you. Get enough of these, and guess what? Slow Downs! …

Ten great careers for computer geeks. The universal acceptance of computers into our daily lives both at work and at home has decreased the image of computer users as being geeks. The word geek itself has evolved a bit going from meaning a socially inept person who gets along better with computers than people to someone who is an expert with computers a guru even. In fact many computer service companies utilize the name geek in their nomenclature because of this new meaning. Not everyone who is proficient in using a computer is a

Computer Problems. How Do You Avoid Them?
By: John Watson
I see Danny Burke of PC Magic once a month to sort out any problems on my computer and to help me move ahead with an internet info product business. Danny spends most of his week rescuing business owners who are having problems with their computers. Last week I asked him for the advice he would give a business owner who was having trouble with his computer. This is the advice he gave me: Keep things simple on your computer. Don’t use it for games etc. Just use it for business. Danny finds that half his customers have caused their own problems by the extras they have downloaded from the internet such as: Additional toolbars for internet explorer. Unnecessary utilities like internet speed boosters which seldom work. Eye candy such as wall paper changers, animated cats etc All most businesses need is A base operating system An email client A web browser An office suite A firewall and anti-virus system Don’t download any old stuff off the internet. The more stuff you put on your hard disk, the more likely it is that you wil …
